To compare the numerous 401(K) calculators out there, we inserted the same numbers, including savings rate, life expectancy and income into three various online and free calculators.

As an example test subject we used a single, 45-year old male currently earning $50,000 per year with a small mortgage, $90,000 in a 401(K) and a savings rate of about 10% per year.

Our subject had a minimal mortgage balance, a savings rate of about 10% and approximately $90,000 saved in a 401(K). He wanted to retire by the time he was 65, live on $50,000 (100% of his pre-retirement income) and he expected to live until the age of 100.

Ballpark recommended that our test subject needed to save just over 55% of his annual income to retire in 20 years with an annual retirement income of $50,000 per year. Changing the retirement age to 70 and even 75 lowered that rate significantly.

The site took about 10 minutes to input our information and produce the results. It was simple to use and lets you add additional or unconventional income sources. Unfortunately, the results can be confusing to read, and if you want to fiddle with your figures, you need to start over from scratch.

Nationwide’s Retirability calculator gives users what it calls an “R-Score,” essentially scoring them on their retirement-readiness. A good score is anything above 100. Our poor test subject scored an 88.

In terms of quality and ease of use, the site was fairly fast and provided clear results. It took about 8 minutes to complete the questionnaire and calculate the results. Afterwards, it provided clear and easy to read results. Another bonus factor? It lets you input major assets like home equity.

The AARP calculator had some grim results, telling us we needed to save over $1600 a month to reach our goal, which is significantly higher than the $416 a month our test subject is currently saving.

In terms of quality and ease, the AARP calculator was fast enough. It took about 10 minutes to complete. Though it wasn’t bursting with features or fancy animations, it definitely produced results that were simple to read and easy to understand.

Many building societies are now dubious about such high lendings, in a lot of cases punishing those who are borrowing more than 75%. So although your borrowing might have seemed OK to the building societies when you took out your current mortgage, now they might not touch you with the proverbial barge pole.

And it’s not just those that have suffered property price drops that are in this difficult position. Until recently some building societies would actually lend up to 125% of the property’s market value. If you were in this position when you took out the mortgage, unless your property value has risen by almost 40% or more, you would still be looking to borrow more than 90%. This would leave a lot of building societies unlikely to be willing to help you.

If you are stuck with an expensive mortgage and want to move to a cheaper one, then the mortgage market can be a mine field. Make sure that you contact a mortgage advisor and let them compare mortgage rates for you, to see if they can find some suitable mortgages for you.

Then list the charges you have incurred and the amounts involved in each, simply saying that you do not believe the amounts to reflect the true cost to the bank.

Next, state the total amount that you have been charged and request that they refund it to you.

Finally, ask them to repay the money in full within 14 days, else you will place a claim against them for the entire amount, plus interest and costs. If you are at all uncertain, plenty of websites show example letters and include calculators to calculate what you are owed.

You have given the bank 2 weeks to reply, so if it doesn’t send a reminder and phone them. They might try to stall by offering a reply at a future date. In this case, write & phone telling them that you are offering them another 14 days before starting court proceedings.

Another trick the banks use is to tell customers that they are mistaken and cannot reclaim or that the charges are not unlawful. In this case, you are probably still at the position of a second letter and then start court action.

If they reply offering the entire claim then you have won. If they offer a partial refund then you have to take a decision as to whether it’s enough or whether you prefer to to continue. If the amount of fees involved are low or the proportion they are offering to repay is large, then the effort of continuing a claim might make acceptance worth while. But if they are offering a very low offer, there might be good rewards in holding out for the full amount. Only you can decide.

If you haven’t got the result you want through writing, then it’s time to try bluffing your bank with court action. If your claim is for less than £5,000, then you can go through the small claims court, even using the online system! If your larger than £5,000, then see if you can reduce the claim, either by not claiming all charges (for example if the claim is £5,001) or if the charges relate to more than one account, make multiple smaller claims.
